Mottled Apatite
Mottled Apatite (#EFD8B8) is a soft amber with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (35°, 63%, 83%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Middle French motteler, to spot / blotch — past-participle of mottle. As a color modifier, mottled implies a pale-and-patchy-and-irregularly-spotted quality, the pale color of jaspered-marble-and-tortoise-shell irregularly-patched-and-mottled natural-stone-and-shell surface-finish. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to dappled and marbled in usage.
A calcium phosphate mineral — known to mineralogists as the source rock for fertilizer and to gem traders as a yellow-to-green-to-blue gem. The yellow variety is mined principally in Madagascar and Brazil. The color refers to a faceted yellow apatite: a saturated, slightly cool yellow with the gem's signature internal warmth.
