Earnest Burtuqāl
Earnest Burtuqāl (#81250C) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (13°, 83%, 28%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Sits in the bold-and-quiet corner of the grid, slightly less luminous than resolute and slightly less institutional than imperial.
The Arabic word for orange — borrowed from Burtuqāl (Portugal), which introduced sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis) to the Mediterranean from East Asian sources in the sixteenth century. The color refers to fresh Arabic-grown sweet oranges: a saturated, slightly cool orange with the satin finish of citrus rind. The Arab-world's name for a fruit named for the country that brought it.
