Folded Carrot

Old English fealdan, to fold — past-participle of fold. Daucus carota, originally a thin pale-purple root in Central Asia. The orange carrot is a seventeenth-century Dutch breeding selection — favored, the story goes, in honor of the House of Orange, though the timing is debated.
