Surveyed Scarlet
Surveyed Scarlet (#FDAA98) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (11°, 96%, 79%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old French surveer, to look upon — past-participle of survey. As a color modifier, surveyed implies a clear-and-measured-and-coordinated quality, the crisp color of Mason-Dixon-Line-and-Royal-Navy-Hydrographic scientific-and-cadastral land-and-sea surveying tradition. Sits at the crisp-and-mapped end of the grid, parallel to mapped and plotted in usage.
From the medieval Latin scarlatum, originally a fine wool cloth rather than a color — the dye came later when the fabric was associated with the bright red of kermes-stained textiles. The defining red of British military uniforms, fox-hunt coats, and The Scarlet Letter. Hotter than crimson, less orange than vermillion: a pure, attention-demanding red.
