Old French tracier, to trace — sharing root with English trace and track. The genus Santalum — particularly S. album, the Indian sandalwood whose aromatic heartwood has been carved into Hindu and Buddhist religious objects since the Vedic period. The color refers to a freshly carved Mysore sandalwood Buddha: a soft, slightly cool warm tan with the satin finish of resin-rich wood.
