Speckled Sugilite
Speckled Sugilite (#FCE7FD) is a soft violet with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (297°, 85%, 95%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English specca, spot — past-participle of speckle. As a color modifier, speckled implies a pale-and-small-spot-distributed quality, the pale color of quail-and-thrush-egg small-spot-distributed natural-egg-and-feather speckled-pattern surface-finish. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to stippled and dappled in usage.
A manganese-bearing cyclosilicate gem first described in 1944, with major sources in South Africa's Wessels Mine. The color refers to a polished sugilite cabochon: a saturated, slightly red-shifted deep purple with the matte finish of opaque mineral. Cooler than amethyst, warmer than tanzanite, with the gem-trade rarity of a stone produced commercially from one principal mine and priced accordingly.
