Pressed Burtuqāl (#FCBD9B) is a soft orange with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Latin pressāre, to press — past-participle of press. As a color modifier, pressed implies a clear-and-smoothed-and-flattened quality, the crisp color of Mid-Century-Modern freshly-pressed-shirt-and-trouser ironed-textile finish. Sits at the crisp-and-finished end of the grid, parallel to ironed and starched in usage.
The Arabic word for orange — borrowed from Burtuqāl (Portugal), which introduced sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis) to the Mediterranean from East Asian sources in the sixteenth century. The color refers to fresh Arabic-grown sweet oranges: a saturated, slightly cool orange with the satin finish of citrus rind. The Arab-world's name for a fruit named for the country that brought it.
