Etymology
Latin acidus, sour — adjectival suffix -ic, sharing root with acetic and acerbic. The French word for madder — Rubia tinctorum — and the dye that colored French military uniforms from the eighteenth century until garance was replaced by synthetic alizarin in 1869.
