Ashen Kesari
Ashen Kesari (#FBDAC4) is a soft orange with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Old English æsce, ash — adjectival suffix -en. As a color modifier, ashen implies a pale-and-grayed-and-drained quality, the pale color of Provençal-domestic-hearth fully-burnt-and-cooled wood-ash residue surface. Sits at the pale-and-drained end of the grid, parallel to wan and pallid in usage.
The Sanskrit and Hindi word for saffron — derived from Crocus sativus — the spice traditionally associated with the topknots of Hindu warriors and the saffron robes of Buddhist monks. The color refers to fresh Kashmir saffron in hot water: a saturated, slightly red yellow-orange with the matte finish of dried Crocus stigmas. The South Asian cousin of saffron.
