Old French surveer, to look upon — past-participle of survey. Kerria japonica, the Japanese rose-family shrub whose bright yellow-orange flowers cover steep hillsides in late spring. Yamabuki-iro (mountain-rose color) gave Japanese its name for a saturated yellow-orange hue used in court robes and woodblock prints.
