Etched Cherry
Etched Cherry (#FA9CA6) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (354°, 90%, 80%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. German ätzen, to etch — past-participle of etch. As a color modifier, etched implies a clear-and-precisely-incised quality, the crisp color of Rembrandt-and-Dürer hand-pulled etching-print fine-line incised-image. Sits at the crisp-and-incised end of the grid, parallel to engraved and inscribed in usage.
Borrowed into English from the Old North French cherise, the cherry has been a cultivated red since at least the Greek colonies of Pontus on the Black Sea. The color refers specifically to the fruit at full ripeness — a clean, sweet red, brighter than wine and warmer than crimson, somewhere between Prunus avium and the lacquered finish of a Stradivarius.
