Etched Burgundy
Etched Burgundy (#FA9BC3) is a soft magenta with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (335°, 90%, 79%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
German ätzen, to etch — past-participle of etch. As a color modifier, etched implies a clear-and-precisely-incised quality, the crisp color of Rembrandt-and-Dürer hand-pulled etching-print fine-line incised-image. Sits at the crisp-and-incised end of the grid, parallel to engraved and inscribed in usage.
Named for the wine region of east-central France — specifically the Pinot Noir of the Côte de Nuits, aged in oak. The color is a deep, slightly brownish red, darker than wine and softer than maroon, with the dusty surface a young Burgundy develops on the rim of a glass. Adopted into English fashion vocabulary in the late nineteenth century and never displaced.
