Iridescent Papaya

Latin Īris, rainbow — adjectival suffix -escent, named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow. Carica papaya, the tropical fruit of Mesoamerica and now a global breakfast staple. The color refers to the inside of a ripe papaya: a saturated, slightly pink orange with the soft texture of melon. Brighter than salmon, warmer than coral, with the distinctive coral-orange that papain — the fruit's signature enzyme — extracts and sells as meat tenderizer.
