Greek phōsphóros, light-bringer — adjectival suffix -escent. Rhodonite color refers to a polished Sverdlovsk rhodonite massive specimen: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the matte finish of manganese-rich silicate. The Greek genus name rhódon (rose) refers to the characteristic deep-pink color of crystalline specimens.
