Frosted Zhusha
Frosted Zhusha (#EFC8C4) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (6°, 57%, 85%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. The past participle of frost, to cover with ice crystals. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as if covered by a thin layer of ice or matte coating. The Chinese name for cinnabar — mercury sulfide — ground into the imperial-seal pigment used in Chinese painting, lacquerware, and the carved cinnabar-lacquer ornaments of the Ming dynasty. The color refers to a freshly stamped zhusha seal on rice paper: a saturated, slightly orange red with the matte finish of fine mineral pigment. Cooler than vermillion, brighter than crimson.
