Cellophane Hollyhock
Cellophane Hollyhock (#EECCCD) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (358°, 50%, 87%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. Etymology
Modern French cellophane, cellulose-thin-film — coined in 1900 by Jacques-E.-Brandenberger. As a color modifier, cellophane implies a pale-and-clear-and-thin-film quality, the pale color of Mid-Century-Modern clear-and-thin cellulose-acetate cellophane-wrapping translucent-film surface. Sits at the pale-and-thin end of the grid, parallel to glassine and tissue in usage.
Alcea rosea, the tall biennial of European cottage gardens whose red, pink, and white flowers spire above the garden in late summer. The color refers to the deep red variety of hollyhock at full bloom: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the matte finish of large mallow-family flowers. Deeper than rose, cooler than coral.
