Etched Apricot
Etched Apricot (#EEBDA9) is a soft orange with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (17°, 67%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. German ätzen, to etch — past-participle of etch. As a color modifier, etched implies a clear-and-precisely-incised quality, the crisp color of Rembrandt-and-Dürer hand-pulled etching-print fine-line incised-image. Sits at the crisp-and-incised end of the grid, parallel to engraved and inscribed in usage.
From the Latin praecox — early ripening — through the Arabic al-barqūq and the Catalan abercoc. Prunus armeniaca, despite the species name, originated in northern China and reached the Mediterranean via the Silk Road. The color is the inside of a sun-ripe apricot at the moment it splits open: a soft, slightly pink orange with the matte finish of velvet-skinned stone fruit. Lighter than peach, warmer than salmon.
