Pasty Garance
Pasty Garance (#EDC7C2) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (7°, 54%, 85%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Etymology
Old French paste, paste — adjectival suffix -y. As a color modifier, pasty implies a pale-and-doughy-and-flat-surfaced quality where the hue carries the visual register of pale-and-flat-textured dough-and-paste color-finish. Sits at the pale-and-flat end of the grid, parallel to wan and pallid in usage.
The French word for madder — Rubia tinctorum — and the dye that colored French military uniforms from the eighteenth century until garance was replaced by synthetic alizarin in 1869. The color refers to garance-dyed French wool: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the matte finish of plant-and-mordant dye. The French equivalent of madder.
