Wan Sake
Wan Sake (#ECFBD7) is a soft lime with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (85°, 82%, 91%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary indigo. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English wann, dark / gloomy (semantic shift to pale by Middle English). As a color modifier, wan implies a pale-and-drained-of-vitality quality where the hue carries the visual register of Edwardian-period pale-and-faintly-tinted dimmed lighting interior color. Sits at the pale-and-drained end of the grid, parallel to pallid and pasty in usage.
The Japanese rice wine — fermented from polished rice and used in religious offerings, weddings, and the kanpai toast. Sake color refers to fresh-poured junmai sake in a masu cedar box: a soft, slightly cool pale yellow with the optical clarity of grain-fermented alcohol. Cooler than mead.
