Settled Akane
Settled Akane (#ECBDBA) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (4°, 57%, 83%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. Rubia cordifolia, the Asian madder root that gave its name in Japanese to a saturated dawn-red color and to one of the oldest dyes in continuous use in Japan. The color refers to a freshly akane-dyed silk: a saturated, slightly orange-shifted red with the plant-dye warmth of natural pigment.
