Engraved Heliotrope

#ecacd9
Notes

Engraved Heliotrope (#ECACD9) is a soft magenta with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (318°, 63%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Engraved
adjective

Old French engraver, to dig in — past-participle of engrave. As a color modifier, engraved implies a clear-and-precisely-cut quality, the crisp color of Albrecht-Dürer-and-Hogarth hand-pulled engraving-print fine-line incised-image. Sits at the crisp-and-incised end of the grid, parallel to etched and inscribed in usage.

Heliotrope
noun

The genus Heliotropium — the cherry pie plant, named in Greek for its supposed habit of tracking the sun (heliotropism). The color refers to a fresh garden heliotrope cluster in late summer: a saturated, slightly red-shifted deep purple-blue with the matte finish of densely packed forget-me-not-style flowers. Cooler than mauve, warmer than indigo, with the perfumed weight of a flower whose vanilla-cherry scent fills a greenhouse.

Moderately saturated colors gain a small bump in P3 — the difference is usually visible side-by-side on wide-gamut hardware but won't change the character of the color.
