Stamped Annatto
Stamped Annatto (#ECA6A5) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (1°, 65%, 79%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Old English stempan, to stamp — past-participle of stamp. As a color modifier, stamped implies a clear-and-impressed-and-repeating quality, the crisp color of William-Morris-and-Liberty-of-London block-printed-textile carefully-impressed pattern. Bixa orellana, the tropical shrub whose seeds yield a red-orange dye used as food coloring (in cheese, butter, and margarine) and as body paint by the Caribbean and Central American indigenous peoples.
