Chalky Azalea
Chalky Azalea (#EBCEE1) is a soft magenta with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (321°, 42%, 86%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Etymology
An adjectival form of chalk — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues with the matte finish of chalk pigment. Chalky white, chalky blue: low saturation combined with the optical mattness of micron-scale calcium carbonate. Sits at the pale-bucket alongside powder and dusty.
Rhododendron subgenus Pentanthera — particularly the deep-magenta Rhododendron indicum cultivars (the Japanese satsuki azalea), cultivated as bonsai and bedding shrubs since the Heian period. Azalea color refers to a fully bloomed Rhododendron indicum terminal truss in a Kyoto temple garden: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the velvet finish of fresh five-petaled bell-flowers in dense terminal clusters.
