Washed Zhusha
Washed Zhusha (#EBCCCA) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (4°, 45%, 86%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. Old English wascan, to wash — past-participle of wash. As a color modifier, washed implies a pale-and-tone-reduced quality where the hue carries the visual register of multi-decade Connecticut-laundry-line repeatedly-washed-and-faded textile color-finish. Sits at the pale-and-faded end of the grid, parallel to faded and bleached in usage.
The Chinese name for cinnabar — mercury sulfide — ground into the imperial-seal pigment used in Chinese painting, lacquerware, and the carved cinnabar-lacquer ornaments of the Ming dynasty. The color refers to a freshly stamped zhusha seal on rice paper: a saturated, slightly orange red with the matte finish of fine mineral pigment. Cooler than vermillion, brighter than crimson.
