Etymology
Greek stróbos, whirling — present-participle of strobe. As a color modifier, strobing implies a saturated-and-pulse-flashing quality, the bright color of concert-strobe-light and photographic-strobe high-frequency-pulse light emission. The smoky-yellow variety of quartz — named for the Cairngorm Mountains of the Scottish Highlands where it has been mined for traditional Scottish jewelry since the medieval period.
