Lightened Hematite
Lightened Hematite (#EAD2CF) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (7°, 39%, 86%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. Old English lēoht, light — past-participle of lighten. As a color modifier, lightened implies a pale-and-tone-raised-and-lightened quality, the pale color of Mid-Century-Modern pale-and-tone-raised interior-decoration paint-and-textile surface. Sits at the pale-and-light end of the grid, parallel to whitened and bleached in usage.
The most-mined iron oxide — ground into red ochre pigment since the Paleolithic and used as everything from cave-painting medium to the polishing agent for cathode-ray tube glass. The color refers to a polished hematite cabochon: a soft, slightly muted deep red-brown with the slight metallic luster of crystallized iron oxide. Drier than rust, warmer than burgundy.
