Latin refulgēns, shining-back — present-participle of refulgere, sharing root with fulgor (lightning). Coquille color refers to a freshly opened Pecten maximus shell-interior in raking light: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the iridescent satin finish of structurally colored aragonite-nacre.
