True Inked Strawberry

Old English trēowe, faithful — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as the canonical version of their family. True red, true blue: the saturation is full, the hue is neither shifted nor adulterated. Sits at the center of the bold and crisp buckets, marking the unequivocal middle of any chromatic family.

Old French enque, ink. As a color modifier, inked implies a hand-inked-line quality, the visual register of medieval-and-Renaissance-inked hand-inked-and-pen-and-ink quill-and-iron-gall-ink hand-inked-and-pen-line surfaces under medieval-and-Renaissance hand-inked-pen-and-quill scriptorium-light. Fragaria × ananassa, the cultivated strawberry of European gardens since the eighteenth century. The color refers to the surface of a ripe berry: a clean, bright red with a slight blue shift in the shadows of the achenes. Warmer than ruby, lighter than crimson, with the optical brightness of fresh fruit rather than the depth of pigment or gem.
