Garish Paprika

#e4603d
Notes

Garish Paprika (#E4603D) is a true red with a vibrant character. It holds its own as a focal accent, carrying visual weight without tipping into neon territory. Its HSL profile (13°, 76%, 57%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Garish
adjective

Middle English garen, to stare — adjectival suffix -ish. As a color modifier, garish implies a saturated-and-eye-stunning-and-overdone quality, the bright color of Las-Vegas-and-Coney-Island over-the-top neon-marquee display. Sits at the bright-and-flamboyant end of the grid, parallel to gaudy and lurid in usage.

Paprika
noun

Hungarian for pepper, the dried powder of mild Capsicum annuum cultivars grown in the southern plains around Szeged and Kalocsa. The color is sweet Hungarian paprika as it dusts the surface of a chicken paprikash: a warm, slightly dusty red-orange that's brighter than rust and softer than cayenne. National pigment of Hungarian cooking since peppers reached Europe through Ottoman trade.
