Mapped Cherry
Mapped Cherry (#E2B3AF) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (5°, 47%, 79%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. Latin mappa, cloth / napkin — past-participle of map. As a color modifier, mapped implies a clear-and-cartographic-and-surveyed quality, the crisp color of Ordnance-Survey-and-USGS scientific-and-cadastral cartographic-and-topographic mapping-and-projection. Sits at the crisp-and-mapped end of the grid, parallel to plotted and surveyed in usage.
Borrowed into English from the Old North French cherise, the cherry has been a cultivated red since at least the Greek colonies of Pontus on the Black Sea. The color refers specifically to the fruit at full ripeness — a clean, sweet red, brighter than wine and warmer than crimson, somewhere between Prunus avium and the lacquered finish of a Stradivarius.
