Latin refulgēns, shining-back — present-participle of refulgere, sharing root with fulgor (lightning). The color refers to a fresh primrose in March: a soft, slightly cool pale yellow with the satin finish of five-petaled flower with darker yellow center. Cooler than cowslip.
