Floaty Cochineal
Floaty Cochineal (#E0BBB5) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (8°, 41%, 79%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. Etymology
Old English flotian, to float — adjectival suffix -y. As a color modifier, floaty implies a pale-and-light-and-suspended quality where the hue carries the visual register of Edwardian-period tulle-and-chiffon light-and-airy float-and-drift textile movement. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to buoyant and floating in usage.
Dactylopius coccus, the Mexican scale insect cultivated on prickly-pear cactus and harvested for its deep red carminic-acid dye. Shipped to Spain by the conquistadors, cochineal became the second most valuable export from the New World after silver. The color refers to fresh cochineal pigment: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the brilliance of a dye thirty times stronger than kermes.
