Drafted Vermillion
Drafted Vermillion (#DFAEB3) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (354°, 43%, 78%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary teal. Old English draht, draft — past-participle of draft. From the medieval Latin vermiculus, little worm — originally the kermes insect again, before the name transferred to ground cinnabar (mercury sulfide) when that pigment displaced kermes for warm reds. The color of Roman frescoes, Chinese imperial seals, the lacquered shrines of Kyoto. Brighter than crimson, hotter than scarlet, with the slight orange edge characteristic of the mineral source.
