Speckled Sorrel
Speckled Sorrel (#DEF4D5) is a soft green with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Old English specca, spot — past-participle of speckle. As a color modifier, speckled implies a pale-and-small-spot-distributed quality, the pale color of quail-and-thrush-egg small-spot-distributed natural-egg-and-feather speckled-pattern surface-finish. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to stippled and dappled in usage.
Rumex acetosa, the European dock-family green whose tart oxalic-acid leaves are eaten as soup ingredient (soupe d'oseille) and salad green. The color refers to fresh sorrel leaves in spring: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the matte finish of arrow-shaped leaves. Cooler than spinach.
