Vaporous Pearl (#DEE0CA) is a soft yellow with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Latin vapōrōsus, full of vapor — adjectival suffix -ous. As a color modifier, vaporous implies a pale-and-water-vapor-suspended quality, the pale color of Industrial-Revolution coal-fired locomotive-and-steamship steam-vapor-plume atmospheric-condition. Sits at the pale-and-veiled end of the grid, parallel to steamy and misty in usage.
The lustrous concretion produced by molluscs (oysters, mussels) in response to an irritant — nacre layers of aragonite and conchiolin laid down over years. The color refers to a high-quality South Sea pearl: a soft, slightly cool off-white with the iridescent satin finish of stacked aragonite plates. Cooler than ivory, warmer than mist, with the gem-trade weight of an organic gem produced one mollusc at a time.
