Ethereal Pearl
Ethereal Pearl (#DDD8B9) is a soft amber with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (52°, 35%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary blue. Etymology
From the Greek aithēr, upper air — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as light, delicate, and otherworldly. Ethereal blue, ethereal pink: very low saturation combined with the optical impression of suspended-in-air translucency. Sits at the pale-bucket alongside ghostly.
The lustrous concretion produced by molluscs (oysters, mussels) in response to an irritant — nacre layers of aragonite and conchiolin laid down over years. The color refers to a high-quality South Sea pearl: a soft, slightly cool off-white with the iridescent satin finish of stacked aragonite plates. Cooler than ivory, warmer than mist, with the gem-trade weight of an organic gem produced one mollusc at a time.
