Aligned Sugilite
Aligned Sugilite (#DDBFF6) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (273°, 75%, 86%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
French à-ligne, to-line-up — past-participle of align. As a color modifier, aligned implies a clear-and-axis-coordinated quality where the hue carries the visual register of carefully-parallel-arranged elements. Sits at the crisp-and-balanced end of the grid, parallel to symmetrical and squared in usage.
A manganese-bearing cyclosilicate gem first described in 1944, with major sources in South Africa's Wessels Mine. The color refers to a polished sugilite cabochon: a saturated, slightly red-shifted deep purple with the matte finish of opaque mineral. Cooler than amethyst, warmer than tanzanite, with the gem-trade rarity of a stone produced commercially from one principal mine and priced accordingly.
