Workmanlike Zǐ
Workmanlike Zǐ (#DDBCF1) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (277°, 65%, 84%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. Etymology
Old English weorcmann, workman — adjectival suffix -like. As a color modifier, workmanlike implies a clear-and-skilled-and-honest quality where the hue carries the visual register of journeyman-craftsman careful-and-competent hand-built craft. Chinese 紫, purple — the imperial court color of the Tang and Song dynasties, derived from Lithospermum erythrorhizon (gromwell) and overdyed with Polygonum tinctorium. Zǐ color refers to a Tang-dynasty imperial robe field: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the silk luster of multi-bath gromwell-root-and-indigo overdye on tussah silk. Cooler than zǐsè (formal deep purple).
