Diluted Tobi
Diluted Tobi (#DDBBBB) is a soft red with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (0°, 33%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Etymology
Latin dīluere, to wash away — past-participle of dilute. As a color modifier, diluted implies a pale-and-water-thinned quality where the hue has been substantially mixed with neutral-or-water medium to reduce its saturation. Named for the tobi — the black kite (Milvus migrans) — the slightly muted red-brown of the bird's plumage and of the tobi-iro dye traditionally used in working-class Edo dress. The color refers to a freshly-dyed tobi-iro cotton: a soft, slightly muted red-brown with the matte finish of plant-and-iron mordant. Drier than rust, warmer than maroon.
