Cellophane Pearl
Cellophane Pearl (#DCD9BB) is a soft yellow with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (55°, 32%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary blue. Etymology
Modern French cellophane, cellulose-thin-film — coined in 1900 by Jacques-E.-Brandenberger. As a color modifier, cellophane implies a pale-and-clear-and-thin-film quality, the pale color of Mid-Century-Modern clear-and-thin cellulose-acetate cellophane-wrapping translucent-film surface. Sits at the pale-and-thin end of the grid, parallel to glassine and tissue in usage.
The lustrous concretion produced by molluscs (oysters, mussels) in response to an irritant — nacre layers of aragonite and conchiolin laid down over years. The color refers to a high-quality South Sea pearl: a soft, slightly cool off-white with the iridescent satin finish of stacked aragonite plates. Cooler than ivory, warmer than mist, with the gem-trade weight of an organic gem produced one mollusc at a time.
