Modest Dust
Modest Dust (#DAAFF6) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (276°, 80%, 83%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Latin modestus, moderate — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as understated and unwilling to claim more visual space than they need. Modest taupe, modest beige: moderate-to-low saturation combined with optical restraint. Sits at the crisp-and-quiet edge of the grid alongside quiet and plain.
Fine particulate matter — atmospheric dust from soil weathering, dry-lakebed loess, the micron-scale residue that settles on every surface in any room with air movement. The color refers to fresh undisturbed dust on a piano lid: a soft, slightly muted very pale warm gray with the powdery finish of micron-scale particles. Lighter than ash, warmer than stone.
