Washed Lazurite
Washed Lazurite (#D9D1F4) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (254°, 61%, 89%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. Etymology
Old English wascan, to wash — past-participle of wash. As a color modifier, washed implies a pale-and-tone-reduced quality where the hue carries the visual register of multi-decade Connecticut-laundry-line repeatedly-washed-and-faded textile color-finish. Sits at the pale-and-faded end of the grid, parallel to faded and bleached in usage.
The principal mineral of lapis lazuli — a sodium-aluminum sulfate-silicate from the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan, the Renaissance source for ultramarine pigment. Lazurite color refers to a freshly cut Sar-e-Sang lapis face showing the central lazurite nucleus: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of pyrite-flecked lazurite ore.
