Pallid Zǐ
Pallid Zǐ (#D9D1E4) is a soft indigo with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (265°, 26%, 86%) places it in the muted band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. Etymology
Latin pallidus, pale. As a color modifier, pallid implies a pale-and-drained-of-color quality where the hue carries the visual register of Edwardian-period drained-of-vitality-and-pale dimmed-lighting interior color-finish. Sits at the pale-and-drained end of the grid, parallel to wan and pasty in usage.
Chinese 紫, purple — the imperial court color of the Tang and Song dynasties, derived from Lithospermum erythrorhizon (gromwell) and overdyed with Polygonum tinctorium. Zǐ color refers to a Tang-dynasty imperial robe field: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the silk luster of multi-bath gromwell-root-and-indigo overdye on tussah silk. Cooler than zǐsè (formal deep purple).
