Unassuming Dove

#d8dce6
Notes

Unassuming Dove (#D8DCE6) is a soft azure with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (223°, 22%, 87%) places it in the muted band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Unassuming
adjective

Latin assūmere, to take up — negative-prefix un- plus present-participle of assume. As a color modifier, unassuming implies a neutral-and-modest-and-not-claiming-attention quality where the hue carries the visual register of Mid-Century-Modern modest-and-quiet-and-unobtrusive interior-decoration surface. Sits at the neutral-and-stripped-down end of the grid, parallel to simple and modest in usage.

Dove
noun

The genus Columba — particularly the European turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur) and the mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) — small ground-feeding columbids whose soft gray plumage gives the color its name. The color refers to a turtle dove's breast feathers: a soft, very pale slightly warm gray with the matte finish of small finely barred feathers. Warmer than pigeon, cooler than mushroom.

Harmonies

This color has effectively no chroma (OKLCH C = 0.014) — it’s on the grayscale axis. Hue rotations don’t change a grayscale color, so complementary, analogous, triadic, and split-complementary all reduce to the same value. They aren’t shown because four identical tiles would be misleading.
