Middle Dutch spange, clasp / metal-disc — past-participle of spangle. The mottled brown-gold of Eretmochelys imbricata (hawksbill sea turtle) shell — used for combs, eyeglass frames, and ornamental boxes from Roman times until the species was protected in 1973.
