Spangled Zǐ
Spangled Zǐ (#D686E2) is a soft violet with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Middle Dutch spange, clasp / metal-disc — past-participle of spangle. As a color modifier, spangled implies a saturated-and-multi-point-reflective quality, the bright color of American-flag-stars and sequined-fabric metallic-disc-and-jewel-decoration. Sits at the bright-and-reflective end of the grid, parallel to glittering and sequined in usage.
Chinese 紫, purple — the imperial court color of the Tang and Song dynasties, derived from Lithospermum erythrorhizon (gromwell) and overdyed with Polygonum tinctorium. Zǐ color refers to a Tang-dynasty imperial robe field: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the silk luster of multi-bath gromwell-root-and-indigo overdye on tussah silk. Cooler than zǐsè (formal deep purple).
