Cellophane Hyacinth
Cellophane Hyacinth (#D5D7FB) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (237°, 83%, 91%) places it in the highly saturated band at a light lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Modern French cellophane, cellulose-thin-film — coined in 1900 by Jacques-E.-Brandenberger. As a color modifier, cellophane implies a pale-and-clear-and-thin-film quality, the pale color of Mid-Century-Modern clear-and-thin cellulose-acetate cellophane-wrapping translucent-film surface. Sits at the pale-and-thin end of the grid, parallel to glassine and tissue in usage.
Hyacinthus orientalis, the bulb cultivated in Persian and Ottoman gardens since at least the eleventh century, named in Greek myth for the youth Hyakinthos accidentally killed by Apollo. The color refers to a fresh purple-blue hyacinth in spring bloom: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted blue with the matte finish of densely packed corollas. Cooler than larkspur, warmer than iris, with the perfumed weight of a flower whose scent fills a greenhouse from doorway to back wall.
