Niveous Sumi
Niveous Sumi (#D5D5F6) is a soft blue with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (240°, 65%, 90%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. Etymology
Latin niveus, snowy — derived from nix (snow). As a color modifier, niveous implies a pale-and-snow-white-and-cool quality, the pale color of Alpine-and-Pyrenean fresh-fallen-snow undisturbed-and-pure snow-cover surface-finish. Sits at the pale-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to snowy and frosty in usage.
Japanese ink stick, made from soot of pine resin or sesame oil mixed with animal-glue binder, used in sumi-e brush painting and shodō calligraphy. Although nominally black, undiluted sumi on rice paper carries a deep blue-violet undertone. Sumi color refers to a heavily-loaded sumi brushstroke: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of pine-soot ink on absorbent washi.
