Dappled Spinel
Dappled Spinel (#D4B8C2) is a soft magenta with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (339°, 25%, 78%) places it in the muted band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Old Norse depill, spot / pool — past-participle of dapple. As a color modifier, dappled implies a pale-and-mottled-and-light-and-shadow-spotted quality, the pale color of summer-orchard sun-through-leaves dappled-light-and-shadow ground-pattern surface. Sits at the pale-and-soft end of the grid, parallel to speckled and mottled in usage.
A magnesium aluminum oxide gem — chemically distinct from corundum (ruby) but optically nearly identical, and frequently mistaken for ruby. The Black Prince's Ruby in the British Imperial State Crown is actually a 170-carat red spinel. The color refers to a faceted Burmese red spinel: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the gem's signature internal warmth. Cooler than ruby, deeper than crimson.
