Sturdy Salmon

#d40e8a
Notes

Sturdy Salmon (#D40E8A) is a true magenta with a vibrant character. It holds its own as a focal accent, carrying visual weight without tipping into neon territory. Its HSL profile (322°, 88%, 44%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Sturdy
adjective

Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.

Salmon
noun

Named for the flesh of the wild Pacific or Atlantic salmon — Oncorhynchus and Salmo salar — colored by carotenoid pigments in the krill and shrimp the fish eats. A pale, peachy red that sits between coral and apricot, warmer than rose and lighter than vermillion. In farmed salmon the color is added to the feed; in wild salmon, it's diet alone.

This color is chromatic enough that authoring it as P3 native (instead of clamping to sRGB) gives a perceptibly more saturated render on wide-gamut displays — modern Macs, iPhones, iPads, and most recent OLED laptops.
